Category 1

Category 1 or Clean Water basically means that it does not pose a substantial threat to humans. Water damage that is considered Category 1 would entail the water supply lines that run into your sink, bathtub, or washing machine.

When your sink, bathtub, washing machine or dishwasher overflows or water heater malfunctions and causes the water supply line to break – this type of water damage is destructive but not life threatening.

Category 2 or Gray Water means that this type of water damage could cause sickness or discomfort if ingested. Water damage that is considered Category 2 would mean that a chemical, biological, or physical contaminants are present.

Examples of contaminants would include water that is mixed or contaminated with detergent, cleaning agents, sump pump failure, urine (no feces), and seepage due to hydrostatic pressure or when your washing machine, dishwasher, toilet overflows.

Category 3
(Black Water)

Category 3 or Black Water is the most dangerous and toxic type of water damage. This is due to the water being grossly contaminated and may contain disease-causing organisms, toxins, pathogenic, or other harmful agents.

Examples of Category 3 or Black Water include sewage, toilet overflows that comes from beyond the toilet trap (despite color or contents), flooding from groundwater or rising water from rivers, streams, and lakes, as well as wind driven rain from heavy storms and other weather related events.
